The Casuarina Hotel Ruins are very popular among locals as a “rumah hantu”, or haunted house. Several urban legends over the years tell tales of guests having supernatural encounters in the hotel when it was still operational. The hotel itself was built from the ruins of the Residency, once the home of the British Assistant Resident stationed in Taiping, Captain T.C.S. Speedy, a man very instrumental in the planning and development of the city of Taiping. The pillars that form a colonnade to the hotel’s main building are what remains of the original Residency building.
Due to the persistent tales of supernatural encounters at the hotel, the number of guests patronising the hotel began to dwindle, and in 2010 the hotel was forced to close.
