This building, built in 1885, once served as the management office for the first rail transportation system in the Malay States, the Perak Government Railway. This entity would later be consolidated with other railroads in the Federated Malay States after 1896 and came to be known as the Federated Malay States Railways (FMSR), the Malayan Railway Administration (MRA) in 1948, and in 1962 came to be known as Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad, the name which exists till today.
This building stands across the street from the site of the first functional railway station in the Malay States, the Taiping Railway Station. This original station location is now the site of the field of the Kind Edward VII Primary School, which also happens to be the first government school in the Malay States.
This building was later repurposed and used as the office of the Sanitary Board and other government department offices till its abandonment in the year 1985. The building has been neglected and is in a sate of disrepair ever since.
This abandoned Malayan Railway Office building is now cordoned off to the public for safety reasons: the structural integrity of the building is questionable, and to deter from the venue being used for nefarious purposes.
