The Tin Mine Mural is located at the intersection of Jalan Ong Saik and Jalan Barrack.
The mural is titled the Discovery of Tin in Larut. This mural commemorates Taiping’s history as the most productive tin mines in the 19th-century Malay States, before the discovery and exploitation of the tin mines in Kuala Lumpur. The mural depicts a woman mining tin using the traditional “mendulang” method, similar to the method of panning for tin ore. Panning was the traditional method employed in the tin mines in Larut prior to the arrival of the Chinese miners contracted under the employ of Ngah Ibrahim, Menteri of Larut, and his successor Long Jaafar. The Chinese miners had a more efficient and productive method of mining, using a combination method of large open mines, in addition to panning.
