The F.M.S. Station, short for the Federated Malay States Station, is a food court and recreational area overlooking the main signage of the Taiping Lake Gardens. There are outdoor and indoor dining areas as well as public restrooms available here. The food court carries a railway-inspired theme, with structures constructed to reflect the designs of railway carriages and a train stop.
There is also a bike rental just outside the food courts in the car park.
Across the street to the left of the food courts is the Taiping Lake Gardens children’s playground.
History
In antiquity, the area where the F.M.S. Station is located used to be the Rajah Rest House, or Istana Gantung in Malay. Traveling in the Malay States in the 19th century was usually a prolonged affair, as it was generally made on horseback, carriage, or on the back of elephants. The Sultan would usually spend some time resting at the Rajah Rest House on his way back to his royal palace in Kuala Kangsar from Taiping.
The Rajah Rest House was considered to be the first rest house specially dedicated to a king (or Sultan) in the Malay States. The Rajah Rest House was demolished in 1985.
