The District Engineer’s Office – Department of Irrigation and Drainage (Pejabat Jurutera Daerah, Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran in Malay) is the government agency responsible for the management of water resources, river basins and water catchment areas, eco-friendly coastal zones, flood mitigation, drainage, and hydrology. This office is in charge of the district of Larut, Matang, and Selama. The department is largely responsible for the irrigation of agricultural and livestock breeding zones in the district.
The building which houses the Department is an old colonial-era structure, presumably dating back to the 1930s, or possibly earlier. More research and investigations are needed to determine a more accurate history of this building. The structure is a large brick and timber building, similar to other colonial-era government offices in Taiping. The ground floor of the building has undoubtedly been renovated to decrease reliance on wood, with almost all of the walls made out of brick. The upper floor, however, remains a wooden structure.
The Department’s office is a large compound, with several much newer buildings built adjacent to and to the rear of the main office building.
