History of the Taiping Post Office
The Taiping Post Office has a proud history of being the first modern postal system in Perak, which was established in 1876. The post office was originally located at the site of the building now known as the Telegraph Museum. At the time telegraph and postal services were combined, and telegrams could more easily be issued.
The current building where the Taiping Post Office is housed was actually the site of the first government bank in the Malay States. It was then the office for the Treasury and Audit Office of Perak, and later the Government Savings Bank, built in 1874.
Upon examination of the building’s façade, one might not find anything overly spectacular, but heading out of the Post Office compounds and walking towards the Telegraph Museum, there is a particularly historical-looking collection of red postal slots. There are also some very old mailboxes outside the Post Office compounds, which are still in use.
The Taiping Post Office is stop number 26 on the Taiping Heritage Trail.
